POETIC LETTERFORMS
I see text and letterforms as a powerful form of emotional expression, not only as the "explanation" part a picture. These pieces allowed me to explore this primary visual form and experiment with a modern symbolic/codified system to provide an emotional context for a message to take shape. In each case, I am interested in trying to "bump up" the visual representation in poetry, or wisdom teaching.
a. "Love is Metaphysical Gravity"
Illustration of a quote by R. Buckminister Fuller. (See LINKS page LINKS>OUR HEROES)

b. The Just
Illustrated of one full section from the "Dhammapada". This is collection of 423 verses that, according to tradition, were spoken by the Buddha on various occasions. This selection, known as "The Just" (in a translation/version by Thomas Byrom) ends with a quintessential Buddhist sentiment: "O Seeker, Rely on nothing, Until you want nothing." c. Shri Yantra I
One in a series of ongoing visual explorations.
The Shri Yantra is an ancient sacred Hindu mandala; a specific graphic shape that suggests creativity and a generous mind. The form here is made up of two kinds of text patterns: one is printed text from a speech by the Dalai Lama that discusses the Tibetan Buddhist concept of phenomenon and creation. The other (blue background) is a pattern I created using my fatherÕs handwriting in stories he wrote and I kept after his death. These stories were meant to "enlighten" me about his life, and life in general!
In this way, the symbol of the Shri Yantra, the messages of the Dalai Lama and of my dad (all forms of what I could consider perennial) are shown through the medium of letterform and text which have an ephemeral nature. Check out our Defective Design shop and get one of these for yourself.
d. Shall I Compare Thee To a Summer's Day?
Illustration of the entire Shakespearean sonnet created entirely from the actual words of this iconic ode to love. Check out our Defective Design shop and get one of these for yourself.
e. She Walks in Beauty Like the Night
Using all the stanzas of a well-known poem by Lord Byron to create an intricate pattern that you can read. Check out our Defective Design shop and get one of these for yourself.
